Subject: Isle of Man's National Day From: GUEST,Bobby Bob, Ellan Vannin Date: 04 Jul 00 - 07:28 PM The Isle of Man's National Day is 5 July (according to the new style calendar). If you work that out by the old calendar, it coincides with the old style 24 June, which was reckoned as Midsummer. The eve and the day are associated with the great god, Manannan Mac Lir, who received tribute from the Manx in the form of rushes. Rushes are still strewn in the church and on the processional pathway from the church to Tynwald Hill, where the world's oldest continuous parliamentary assembly, Tynwald, meets for a special open-air session on 5 July (new style). The laws that have been passed during the previous year are read out in English and in Manx Gaelic. There'll be music and dancing and general enjoyment going on. It's also the start of this year's Peel Festival of the Sea (the Traditional Boat Weekend in slightly longer form, 5 - 9 July) and a romp through Manx history in a presentation called 'The Story of Man and all that' which is being held in the grounds of Peel Castle from 5 - 9 July. I haven't got a copy myself yet, but I'll keep you posted because that looks as though it will be a good source for the sort of songs you're looking for. |

3. 'Smuggler's Lullaby' (traditional, translated from the Manx Gaelic by Mona Douglas)
4. 'Bulgham Bombshell' (written by Stuart Slack)
5. 'King of the Sea' (shown as 'Trad,' and based on traditional tune, 'Yn Colbagh Breck er Sthrap' [The Brindled Heifer on a Halter}, but from the 1896 publication, 'Manx National Songs', with words by J. Fred. Gill (who was a Deemster, or High Court Judge) in the Isle of Man)
6. 'Ellan Vannin Tragedy' (written by Hughie Jones of The Spinners about the wreck in 1909)
7. 'Laxey Girls' (written by Stuart Slack - this is the one you were asking about) 8. 'Ride the Rails' (written by Stuart Slack). The number on the CD is RJCD04. It costs £11.99 in the shops here.

It was called, as I remember "The Manx Cat and Other Folk Tales". Besides the tale of the Manx cat losing it's tail because she was late boarding Noah's Ark. (Noah's wife finally called her the way my grandma taught me to call cats, by hissing ssspssspssspss.) There was the story of the Fenodree, and a wonderful tale of a fiddler who wound up playing for one of Satan's parties. If anyone could reccomend an anthology that wasn't written for 10 year olds, I'd appreciate it. |
